No-frills Midi controller with Midi output and decent key response This is my second one, the first was lost in a flood (long story!). It's a no-frills Midi controller with USB and, that's more important to me, Midi connections. I don't trust USB connections, the latency issues can be discouraging; it's fine for powering the device, though. I tried a lot of affordable Midi controllers and most have a key action that's uncomfortable, to say the least.
The 61es has the best key response I've experienced - it's by no means 'piano like' but I got used to the response pretty quickly. Pushing Midi events over this controller is not really easy, but that's now what I'm using it for - use Cubase or Reaper, download some decent piano VSTs and you have a lot to work with. It could be a little more flexible in terms of drums, arbitrary Midi events, and the keys are, well, a little small and (as I said) a matter of getting used to. But concerning the money (170$ new, around 100$ refurbished) I don't think you can really complain! I highly recommend this M audio key station for you! Not having the money or space to buy a piano, I decided to research keyboards that were reasonably priced & also high in quality. After my research I decided this m audio key station was my best option.
Having now owned it for a couple of months now, I can say I made the correct choice. It is very nice, easy to use, & has tons of features. The semi weighted keys are great, & the ignite software is unbelievable. It is great for just learning or recording. I just couldn't imagine making a better choice than this particular keystation. I highly recommend it!
Good manuals for Virtual Pipe Organ (VPO) setups I have ordered two M-Audio Keystation 61es MIDI keyboards (controllers). These keyboards make no sound of their own, but plug into a computer via USB (traditional MIDI connection is also usable) to control DAW software. In my case, I am using these for the software GrandOrgue, a virtual pipe organ software. They work well, and the software detects them very easily. When I can't get to a real organ to practice, these at least give me the ability to work on manuals at home or on the road. Some people have removed the internals of these and mounted them into keystacks that they have built to AGO standards.
I do plan to do this eventually, but for now, I'll deal with 4' instead of 2' between manuals stacking them directly on top of each other. Each keyboard also has a modulation wheel and a pitch bend. I have been able to map the modulation wheels to the virtual swell pedal, crescendo pedal, and choir pedal on the GrandOrgue software, and have been able to also assign the volume sliders to those pedals. So each keyboard gives 2 possibilities to control the pedals. I have also successfully been able to map the modulation wheels when I need to control a toggle function on the software, such as a piston or tab switch. The 'semi weighted' keys does approximate the resistance I feel in some of the pipe organs I play, but it is not an exact match. I have not found that to be a hindrance.
What I practice on these, I can easily play on the real organs I play. All in all, these are nearly the ideal keyboards to build a makeshift practice setup using software like GrandOrgue or Hauptwerk.
All in all, I'm very happy with the two I have purchased, and hope to acquire at least 5 (for a four manual VPO and one for practicing while on the road). Excellent keybed action, no nonsense controller, if a bit cheap feeling. I generally do not like m-audio control hardware, for the obvious reasons.feels cheap, looks cheap. But, this is hands down the best keybed (yes, keyBED) i've used with respect to midi controllers or synths.
The action is just resistive enough not to be tiring over long periods of playing, and not so giving that the adjustment coming from an actual piano is too distracting. Over time, the body creaks and cracks with handling, but i'll continue to use it until it falls apart.
